Can Genital Warts Be Cured?

We’ve all asked the question; “can genital warts be cured?”, but the answer to that question lies within the cause of genital warts.  Genital warts is caused by the HPV virus or medically speaking, the human papillomavirus.  At present, there is no cure for the HPV virus, but there are some effective treatments for getting rid of  genital warts.

Today, many women can help prevent HPV from developing into cervical cancer by having cervical screening done yearly through a (pap) test.  This test will detect abnormal cells which can develop into cancer at a later stage.  Once found, a woman is then asked to have a colposcopy, which takes biopsies of the abnormal areas for further investigation.  If warranted, the abnormal cells are then frozen through a procedure called cryotherapy.  Treating the cells like this will prevent them from developing into cervical cancer.

Pap smears have definitely reduced the number of women getting cervical cancer, so women having their yearly pap test;  it’s a great precautionary method of protection.

So, can genital warts be cured? – Genitals warts most definitely can be cured, but not the virus that causes it (HPV).  When it comes to safe sex to help prevent further spreading of this disease, then condoms are the most effective.  But bear in mind, the use of condoms, may not always protect you from getting the genital herpes virus, due the fact that this disease is very contagious, and can be caught from individuals who are already infected with the disease, especially through infected skin surfaces, that are not in the genital area.

Todate, HPV is estimated as being the most common sexually transmitted infection in America today.  Majority of sexually active men and women will at some point in their live, come into contact with the HPV virus.  By the age of 50, more than 80% of today’s American women will have contracted at least one strain associated with the genital HPV virus.

So, in conclusion – can genital warts be cured?  Yes – but unfortunately, not the human papillomavirus.  So, having safe sex is definitely a means for HPV prevention.
